Nature of Desire Holding the Cards Joey W Hill 9781843604006 Books

I have decided to re-read A Nature of Desire Series before I read, Truly Helpless: A Nature of Desire Series Novel (Volume 10), that was released on 30 Apr. 2017. Joey, has the uncanny ability to make you cry on one page, then giggle on the next page. Truly a gift. As I did again in this re-read of Holding the Cards: A Nature of Desire. I wanted to give a true review in my eyes only. The power in ones desire to help, open, and make someone bleed is from page one to the end. Joey, opens your eyes to a new level of finding love, healing, and submitting is overwhelming. Her characters come to life, the setting is true, and you can't stop yourself from not living in the characters eyes, for you become that one character you're drawn too. This book is a must read in my eyes!

Nature of Desire Holding the Cards Joey W Hill 9781843604006 Books Reviews

Warning This review might contain what some people consider SPOILERS.

Rating 8/10

PROS
- Hill is an excellent writer. The characters are well-rounded, the dialogue is realistic, the plotting is tight, and the exposition is pithy and at times very funny.
- Many of the plot devices are overdone and predictable, but Hill manages to make them work for the most part. She even makes fun of the story's progression at one point "[Lauren] had been sucked into some parallel dimension, where every tawdry cliché from a cheap romance novel was going to be played out."
- I enjoyed reading about each of the (three) main characters in the story. Lauren and Josh are interesting, and I believed that they belonged together after just the short amount of time covered in the story. It was Josh's friend Marcus, though, who I thought was the most intriguing I found the one scene describing him and his young lover at a BDSM club to be more intimate than many of the scenes between Josh and Lauren. So Marcus sort of overshadows the main couple at times, which I'm not sure is a good thing.
- The sex scenes are very hot. And they get progressively better and more in-depth as the story progresses. This is, I must admit, frustrating at times, but the payoff is pretty decent.

CONS
- This is the 4th novel (3rd romance) I've read by Joey W. Hill, and while they're all good because she's a fantastic writer, this one didn't have the all-encompassing, very settled feel of the other two. The ending is happy and all; it's just a little open for my taste.
- Some scenes are entirely from one character's POV, and other scenes switch around. I found the switchy scenes difficult to navigate at times because I was expecting a comment about Josh to be from his perspective when in reality it was Lauren's PERCEPTION of Josh.
- As much as I liked the character of Marcus (and look forward to reading his story in Rough Canvas), I did get a LITTLE annoyed on a couple of occasions when he was present and I didn't want him to be. I understand that he's necessary Josh feels safe with him, and it's only Marcus's presence that allows Josh to let go with Lauren and allow her to draw him out of himself the way he needs someone to do. But there were just a couple of intimate scenes that I wanted to be "Josh and Lauren" that were instead "Josh and Lauren plus Marcus."

Overall comments I made the mistake of reading Ice Queen and Mirror of My Soul before this volume because I didn't realize this one occurs chronologically before those two in the world of the stories. So one of the big REVEALS in this book wasn't at all a shock to me I knew about it already from the later books. This is a solid romance, that's for sure; although I found it just a tad disappointing after reading the near-perfection that is the Ice Queen-Mirror of My Soul story.
Mistress Lauren retreats to an island paradise to a cottage loaned to her by friend Lisette. Having fallen victim to a sadistic submissive named Jonathon. Still having reoccurring visions of his cold and unfeeling manipulations of her emotions. She longs for a sub she can call her own and share her life with....intimacy, devotion and love.

Joshua is the caretaker on the island, once a brilliant sculptor, and Lauren spies him as submissive. The two are drawn to each other at first sight. Both Josh and Lauren are damaged and need each other to get that balance of D/s back to heal the scars.

A powerful story of redemption and new found love.....of opening up your heart to let someone in....that special someone you've been looking for all your life!
Both Lauren and Josh have had relationship in the past, where they lost who wa really the Dom or Sub.
How often does this happen in life. It makes you wonder. Just because you are the male, does that mean you are the strongest?

Josh lives as a recluse, caretaker of many.
Little did he know that Lauren could heal him. His ex did a number on him, letting him think he was in control, whereas she really orchestrated the relationship. Until he hit rock bottom.

Lauren goes to the secluded island thinking she will try to get her ex, Jonathan out of her head.

Then adding Marcus in the mix! Wow. Although he is definitely a very strong Dominant, he hasn't been able to help heal Josh. Together Lauren and Marcus break Josh down, until he can see the truth. He is not a monster, as he thought, just directed by another's selfishness, not caring if their actions hurt another.

I would like to see Marcus's story have a happy ending.

Very easy read, scenes flowed from one to another.
I look forward to reading the next in the series. Although they can be read as a stand-alone.
