A lush setting and the author made every scene in the book come to life with her beautiful, vivid descriptions of the country. I loved Sri Lanka and spent a month visiting there 25 years ago and the book brought back fond memories. The story was very well done, the character development top-notch and I was so disappointed for the book to end. The Tea Planter Wife eBook Dinah Jefferies Reviews
Enjoyed the interaction of the characters as they all tried to come to terms with the situation in which they found themselves. As they worked towards the final disclosures, each from a different point of view and with different anxieties one was confronted by one's own feelings at the different responses.
How many times can you use the phrase "twisted around" to mean turn? I counted at least 10 times, and then gave up. Way too many repeated descriptive words. Hey, you are a writer, come up with something new. It was too long of a "romance" novel for the simple story. It was mostly about how the main character could get her husband in bed, and then to manipulate him and lie to him...No surprise in the end. Just boring. I really couldn't care about these weak characters, weak plot. I struggled to finish it for my book club. the only thing that was semi-interesting was the locale and even that should have been more colorfully expressed. A real disappointment. Sorry.
Some women in my book club gave it a 10. I thought it was a weak Romance Novel (w/ soap opera qualities).
I love historical novels and this was one of the best....the poignant descriptions of the landscape, locals and smells transport the reader to colonial Ceylon (Sri Lanka)...this is an engrossing story of love, betrayal and racial divide on a tea plantation in the final days of colonialism in Ceylon...a story that beckons you in and keeps you hooked until the last page...
Kind of soap opera-y but very interesting. Actually, couldn't our it down.
Excellent historical fiction about tea planting, country and people mostly unfamiliar with me. Author held my attention throughout...
I enjoyed this book immensely. Great character development. In fact, though I finished this book a week ago I'm still thinking about the plot and the characters. I highly recommend it.
