I'm giving this novel one star because it makes no sense. Spoilers to follow.... Julep, the lead, is supposed to be the best con artist in the land, and yet, she's the one getting conned by everyone she encounters. For such a talented grifter, she trusts people that she has no reason to trust, which is a theme and red flag throughout. Other people put their necks on the line and risk their lives for Julep for absolutely no reason. Her father plans an intricate scavenger hunt for her in case he goes MIA. The majority of the story is centered around this scavenger hunt and her solving all of his clues. As it turns out, she figures out everything and it leads to and means absolutely nothing. The reader is lead on this journey with her that turns out very unsatisfying. Julep has two love interests in the story and doesn't end up with either one of them. One is unnecessarily killed off and the other is being shipped off to boarding school by his parents and welcomes it. Eye roll. The bad guys conveniently and openly discuss all of their crimes in front of Julep, so she can record them. Double eye roll. It all ends with her being 16 and somehow opening up her own PI firm. Triple eye roll. Most of the story leads to nothing and none of the story makes sense. I'd definitely pass on this one. This story was so annoying and stupid and unbelievable that I didn't even bother reading the bonus chapters for the next book.

- Occurrences were a little unbelievable or too easily solved and managed at times
- Julep's reactions and emotions were often distant when an emotional side of her could've been explored
- Secondary characters and love interest were too two-dimensional to connect with
- The dark issue presented in the storyline played a too shallow part to feel important or necessary
- Scenes that should've been huge, significant, and dramatic fluttered by like any other and ended up unmemorable

This book was pitched as being like HEIST SOCIETY by Ally Carter and I can see some similarities. The female narrator - Julep Dupree - is a self-described grifter who is currently running cons in her exclusive private school. She also begins the book by telling us that she doesn't have a conscience. However, we also have to remember that she is a liar who will tell whatever story she needs to in order for her con to work.

At the story's beginning Julep comes home to find a trashed apartment and a missing father. Her immediate desire is to find him and to keep his absence a secret because fifteen-year-old without adult supervision wind up in foster care. She also has to find a way to make money to afford her rent and private school tuition. The money part isn't too difficult; she begins offering false IDs for sale and quickly has more business at her school that she can handle.

Tracking down her father is considerably harder. She is being followed by a mysterious person in a tricked-out Chevelle and she is also being followed by a guy who says he was hired by her best friend Sam to keep her safe.

It wouldn't be a teenage novel these days if it didn't have a love triangle. In this case, Julep catches the attention of the Big Man on Campus - Tyler Richland. Julep can't read him; all of a sudden her grifter's skills at reading people aren't working so well. They aren't working very well with her best friend Sam either. She and Sam have been friends for years and he has been her willing partner in most of her schemes but she somehow misses that he wants to be more than friends.

The plot was complex but Julep's skills at the con made for a mostly successful operation. There was one quite surprising loss. The emotions got intense and so did the danger as Julep, Sam and Tyler try to follow the clues her father left for her and find out what is going on. Julep has to pull off her biggest con yet to save those who needed to be saved and to survive herself.

I enjoyed the story and hope that more adventures are in Julep's future.
Julep Dupree is a grifter. The one thing you really need to know about her is that Julep Dupree is not her real name. The reader actually doesn’t ever find out her real name unless you figure out the clues that Mary Elizabeth Summer leaves for you. Julep Dupree is a con-artist and she comes from a family of con-artists. This is the life that Julep has known all of her life. Julep really wants to make something of herself. She goes to a fancy school for rich kids in order to earn a good education so she can go to college. Then her dad goes missing and now she needs to find him.

I love Julep’s character. I think there is so much too her. I love the mystery that is presented to the reader. The reader gets to follow Julep in her search for her dad or what could have happened to her dad. I was pulled into this story right away and was completely hooked. I love it so much. I thin all the characters were great. I wanted to throw the book at Summer a few times because of incidents that happened.

Summer really shows how great of a writer she is, with this novel. For a debut novel she did a fantastic job. I would put her name up their with Ally Carter who does great mystery/ puzzle solving novels. I would keep coming back for more of Julep and her gang of friends. I feel like Julep learned a lot in this first novel and I am completely ready to dive into the second one. This was a page turner and I am looking forward to the second one being another page turner.

Even though Julep is pretty much a juvenile criminal she is such a lovable character because she is so smart and creative. She really puts a lot of thought into the work that she does and she wants to help other accomplish things too. I love that Julep has goals for her life. I really love this main character and I think others will too!
